Nasi Ganja @ Jalan Yang Kalsom Ipoh
Location: Rumah Tumpangan dan kedai Kopi Yong Suan, 2, Jalan Yang Kalsom, 30250 Ipoh, Perak
Well there is much to talk about this little gem located right in the heart of Ipoh. The Nasi Kandar here is so mouthwatering people keep calling it “Nasi Ganja” as its nickname, which literally means “Cocaine Rice”. Even a friend of mine from Penang told us that his uncle who is a dignitary allegedly had his driver drive down to Ipoh from Penang in search for THE Nasi Kandar. I cannot vouch for that story, but my friends and I did just exactly that- we came all the way from KL for the real deal!
Anyway it is an 'old school' type shop, where the owner of the restaurant actually shares its food service with the other renters that he rents out the space in his shop with. The Nasi Kandar stall is located in a coffee shop called “Rumah Tumpangan dan Kedai Kopi Yong Suan”. The owner is a Chinese family who serves the crowd their fantastic coffee while the Sidek Brothers serve their customers this Nasi Kandar with its specialty spiced chicken or 'Ayam Berempah'. It is easier to find if you look out for the nearby police station as it is just across the street. Yuk Choy Primary School is also another excellent landmark.
The crowd is always queing during lunch time, but fret not; the service is fantastic and quick. Just pick up your plate of rice, select your favorite side dishes and do not miss the curry - this is what launches it to its legendary status! This is definitely the one place you do not want to miss out when you are around Ipoh.
p/s: A word of caution - It is spicy!
